Data on diversity in Australian screen productions from the first three years of The Everyone Project

The Screen Industry Diversity Network (SDIN) today released Everyone Counts 2.0, the second report produced from the groundbreaking online tool The Everyone Project, which tracks diversity in the Australian screen industry.

Everyone Counts 2.0 shares data from the first three years of this cross-screen industry initiative, with results drawn from 12,900 on and off-screen contributor roles filled by 6,976 unique individuals in 395 Australian TV and film projects from July 2021 to June 2024.

A long-term project designed to support Australian screen organisations to track and boost diversity in their screen productions, The Everyone Project’s new three-year combined study enables new insights on intersectionality, and data on socio-economic status for the first time.

The report notes an increase in participation including year-on-year growth in the numbers of demographic surveys completed, screen industry roles counted, and production companies registered, building on the inaugural data released in 2022 in Everyone Counts: Preliminary data on diversity in the Australian screen industry from The Everyone Project, which attracted responses from 2,811 cast and crew across 70 TV and film productions completed in 2021–22.

The report reveals representation both on and off screen of women, First Nations people, people with disability, LGBQA+, transgender, intersex and gender diverse people, primary carers, people aged over 55 years, the ethnicity and socio-economic status of respondents, and people who speak languages other than English at home.

Frequency of recruitment and intersectionality of these groups is also detailed, with all data compared to population benchmarks.

The Everyone Project is an industry-wide initiative to measure diversity and the inclusion of historically under-represented and excluded voices and filmmakers, and enables funding organisations to compare diversity on projects they fund with results across the industry.

The Everyone Project aims to document the diversity of all roles on TV and film projects in Australia – from extras through to on-screen leads; producers through to runners; and hair and make-up through to visual effects; working on productions ranging from reality TV through to feature films.

The report comes as the SDIN transitions to its new administrative home. Now in its eighth year of operation, the SDIN launched in 2017 under its original host Australian Film and Television Radio School (AFTRS), before moving to the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC) in 2022. From July 1 2025, SDIN will be hosted by The Everyone Project under a model focused on practical engagement with industry.

The new hosting arrangement will see the executive functions of the SDIN continue to be managed by agreement of member organisations, with The Everyone Project continuing to operate independently, including independently managing The Everyone Project industry survey tool. The Everyone Project will enable greater support for producers and production companies in engaging with the tool to increase accuracy and quality of the diversity data collected. Through delivery of educational resources and practical engagement initiatives, and by enhancing its reporting methodology, The Everyone Project aims to increase screen industry adoption of the diversity data tool with ongoing sector collaboration guiding future updates to ensure it remains responsive to industry needs and priorities.

The SDIN will also continue to coordinate judging of the SDIN Award, presented annually at the Screen Producers Australia annual conference, Screen Forever.

The SDIN acknowledges the outstanding leadership of outgoing Co-Chairs, Head of Film, Screen and Culture at Monash University Olivia Khoo and independent producer Loani Arman, who led the organisation for the last two years. The SDIN also thanks and acknowledges outgoing SDIN Project Officer Anita Kimber, who has provided administrative support to the SDIN under the hosting of the SAFC since August 2023.
Founder of The Everyone Project Adam Smith said “As The Everyone Project continues to grow and evolve, we are pleased to note a continual increase in participation over the past three years, demonstrating SDIN members committed to increasing diversity and inclusion at all levels.

“With a clear alignment in our values and purpose, The Everyone Project is pleased to take on a new role supporting the administration of the SDIN, and we are committed to evolving The Everyone Project to ensure improved outcomes for industry.”

The Screen Diversity and Inclusion Network (SDIN) is a network of broadcasters, screen funding agencies, business associations, guilds and industry-aligned education and training organisations who have committed to work together towards an inclusive and diverse screen industry.
